Fast Fashion-A con in Economy
Hi, My Morning Glories! Welcome to another blog today. We will be discussing fast fashion and how it’s a problem in this day and age.
Fast Fashion has become a staple in our current age, with all the quick and upcoming trends dying out and returning. People often overconsume when it comes to trends that are cheap and within their budgets, of course, everyone loves to shop for stylish clothes and accessories when it’s within our budget. With all the prices going up, I’d enjoy shopping for clothes that fit right into my bank account. The economic and environmental impacts of fast fashion aren’t devastating but they are bad, nonetheless.
One of the most heartbreaking effects of fast fashion is child labor. In many developing countries these fast fashion companies exploit them because they see it as cheap and unprotected labor since many of these children are just looking to provide for their family. These companies often violate human rights laws by overworking these children. This has negative effects on the children, mentally, psychically, and socially stressing them. I mean just imagine your nine-year-old daughter or sister working for these companies with bags under their eyes and in horrific conditions that could hurt them.
The environmental effects of fast fashion are broad and some of them could be long-lasting since dyes and chemicals are seeping and poisoning the earth. Many animals and plants quite obviously depend on the soil and are sustained by the plants they eat. When the plants are poisoned, either dying or growing with the chemicals within them which will also poison the animals that eat these plants, after that happens it can disrupt the balance in the habitat. Fast fashion also contributes to carbon emissions and wastes a lot of materials. In America alone we throw away around 11.2 million tons of textile waste annually. That isn’t even the Global percentage.
Economically, it’s double-sided, it’s creating jobs and people are earning money really for the rich. It's amazing. It’s a consumerist scam that we all partake in. It prioritizes money over sustainability and quality. I mean it’s the quantity over quality war all over again. How do you eat the rich if the bread they feed you is cheap but bad? It’s hard to take these things into mind as the common person. Like look, it's 2024, and the average middle-class person can’t afford a house anymore, how the hell do we combat fast fashion when it's all we can afford? A solution could be sticking to one style of clothing and buying from cheap but sustainable and good retailers. An example could be choosing your general clothing style to be goth, twee, coquette, grunge, and many others. Then look for clothes that fit this style in good retail stores or clothing websites. Thrifting is an awesome idea for this, yes some resellers make this quite hard, but many of the clothes found at thrifting stores are used and in good shape for them to be there. Be mindful of what you buy and how you combat fast fashion.
Of course, tell me of all the ways and examples of how you could fight against the fast fashion companies. I would love to see your examples and comments. Have a great day, wherever you are Morning Glories.
Affirmations for today:
I am confident, and I am worth it.
I am enough, I have enough
I will be kind to myself and others
I belong here
I am unafraid to be myself
I am brave even in the midst of fear
Love your body and respect it
To feel fresh and new, I recommend taking a 15-minute walk or running outside. It’s great for your heart and mind. Meditate. Let your mind rest and let it feel at peace for at least 10 minutes a day. Drink water, alas as knights of flesh, we must fight those horrid kidney stones! Wash your face before bed! I get that we are tired after a long day of work or school or straight-up interacting with people (Introverts will get it), but wash that face, I promise you’ll feel good right after.
Remember to comment, and share, I’d love to see your recommendations,
